Stress is one of the worst things for your hair. Chronic stress causes thinning and hair loss over time by pushing the hair follicles into what is called a resting phase, where the follicles stop producing new hair. During times of extreme stress, and up to several months afterward, you may find your hair falling out simply by gentle brushing. Getting your stress under control is one of the best things you can do for your hair.
Other causes of hair loss include: chemical hair treatments, hormonal changes (both men and women are affected), diabetes, thyroid problems, restrictive diets, poor nutrition, menopause, and postpartum.

Your health is reflected in your hair

While some of these issues require professional medical attention to correct (such as thyroid problems), there are lots of simple and natural ways that you can improve the health of your hair.

What stimulates hair growth naturally?

Scalp massage stimulates circulation in your scalp, which brings fresh blood carrying nutrients to the hair follicles. Simply massage your scalp with your fingertips daily.

Certain oils, such as castor, jojoba, and avocado, nourish and moisturize the scalp and hair follicles. Apply the oil to your fingertips and massage into the scalp. Leave on several hours or overnight, then shampoo out.

Rinse your hair with cold water, which stimulates the scalp.

Use a silk pillowcase instead of cotton. Silk allows your hair to glide as you sleep, so that you wake up with fewer tangles.

Exercising several times per week benefits every part of your body, including your hair.

Eat a healthy diet, with fresh fruits, vegetables, and high quality protein, to give your body the building blocks it needs to make hair.

Herbs for hair growth and thickness

There is a whole list of botanicals that support and build the health of your hair over time, when used consistently. There are two main things that these hair-friendly herbs do for you: they help improve circulation to your scalp, and they provide minerals and other nutrients that the body needs to create healthy hair. The herbs that assist with circulation to your scalp include rosemary, ginger, and ginkgo. (These herbs are also good for your brain!)

Horsetail and oatstraw are high in silica, the main mineral building block of hair, nails, and connective tissue. Nettles are rich in many vitamins and minerals, and amla is high in vitamin C and bioflavonoids. He shou wu is a Chinese tonic herb that has been used for over a thousand years to nourish the hair.

You can play around with the individual ingredients and create your own blend. Make sure you drink your hair tea twice a day, five days a week, for a bare minimum of thirty days. When I work on my hair, I see results in my nails within 30 days, but it takes around ninety days to see noticeable changes in my hair. This is because hair grows approximately 1/2 inch per month, so it takes a little while to see the difference. Just because you don't see it right away doesn't mean it isn't working. Stick with it.
