When someone mentions chai, we typically think of a drink that’s creamy, sweet, and a little spicy. The spices used in chai can also be used to make other tasty Fall drinks as well. One of my favorite Autumn beverages is hot apple cider that has been simmered with chai spices. Every time I make this recipe, it disappears faster than you can say “boo”, so I thought you might like to try it too!
This particular version of the recipe calls for the addition of fresh cranberries, which add a boost of vitamins as well as a yummy tart bite.
You will need
- 2 quarts organic apple cider
- 1/4 cup (or more) fresh cranberries
- 8 heaping teaspoons Naked Chai (organic Chai spices without any caffeine or other ingredients)
- 1” piece of fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced (optional)
Place all of the ingredients in a stainless steel saucepan. Cover the pan with a lid and simmer everything together over low heat for 15-20 minutes. Taste and make sure it’s the right level of tartness; you can add a touch of maple syrup if it’s too tart, or more cranberries if you think it needs a little bit more bite. (If you do add more cranberries, crush them a little before adding them to the pot; cover and simmer for another 5 minutes.)
You can strain the berries and spices out by pouring the tea through a strainer, or you can simply ladle the tea into your cup directly from the pot.
Feel free to add your own favorite ingredients. Some fun ideas include orange sections, pomegranate seeds, pear slices, a small sprig of rosemary, or a tiny pinch of cayenne. Please share YOUR favorites.
