The Magic of Palo Santo

A lot of folks come into our store and ask why we carry the small, plain-looking sticks of wood that sit along with incense and sage. But these aren’t just any twigs- they come from a powerful plant known as Palo Santo, which in Spanish, literally translates to “holy wood”, and is distributed throughout Central and South America. What makes this wood so special? In short, it possesses extraordinary healing properties that clear away negative energy, calm the nervous system, and boost immunity. Curious? Read on!

Energetic Cleansing

Palo Santo is commonly burned in a similar manner to sage to expel negative energy and cleanse spaces. For millennia, it was used traditionally by the Inca Shamans and medicine people for this purpose. It is commonly used ceremonially for raising the vibration of a space in preparation for meditation- enhancing serenity, intuition, creativity, wisdom, and good fortune.

Healing

Palo Santo can be kept in its whole form, burned (as it usually is), or used through its essential oil. Palo Santo is used for relieving cold and flu symptoms, cancer, anxiety, stress, depression, emotional pain, congestion, and asthma. It has also been shown to help with headaches and chronic fatigue. Palo Santo lowers inflammation and reduces the perception of pain. It is believed to heal the heart by bringing love to those who use it. It helps reduce allergy symptoms and contains antiseptic compounds that help to keep air clean and free of harmful bacteria, viruses, and molds. Lastly, it repels mosquitos and other pesky bugs.

Sustainability

Although Palo Santo was traditionally harvested only from fallen branches and twigs of the tree, illegal harvesting has unfortunately become common. This is why it is so important to purchase ethically and sustainably harvested Palo Santo, like what is sold at Loose Leaf Tea Market.

How to Use Palo Santo

Although Palo Santo is fragrant on its own, it is best when burned, and smokes generously. All you need to do is light an end and wait for the flame to die out, which should happen within a few seconds. Then, the Palo Santo will release its distinctive, fragrant vapors. Just run the Palo Santo through the area you wish to cleanse, or over your body (particularly your front and back heart centers). You will notice an immediate shift in mood and energy!
