Herbs For Dogs (Because Dogs Are People Too)

 

Many of the herbs that you can take for your own health and wellness can also be given to your furry best friend. It’s not likely that you and your dog will have tea together, but you can add herbs to peanut butter, or make these easy DIY herbal dog biscuits. You can customize the recipe to suit the unique health and nutritional needs of your dog. If your pet has inflammation, you can skip the gluten and dairy by substituting wheat flour for rice or buckwheat flour, and switch milk powder for coconut milk powder. 

 

You will need:

3 cups flour (regular or gluten-free)

1 cup cornmeal

1 cup steel cut oats

2/3 cup dry milk (dairy or powdered coconut milk)

1 ½ cups broth (beef, chicken, vegetable, or miso)

1/2 cup olive oil

2 eggs, beaten

2 tablespoons of the appropriate herbal powder blend (see below)

Blend all dry ingredients in one bowl. Blend the wet ingredients in a separate bowl, then mix wet and dry ingredients together to make into dough. On a floured board, roll out the dough to ½ “ thick. Cut shapes with cookie cutters. Bake in 400˚ oven for 25 – 25 minutes, until they are completely cooked. Turn off the heat and let the biscuits cool in oven to make sure they dry out completely.

 

Here are a few important things to consider before giving medicinal herbs to your pet:

  • Not all herbs are safe for dogs and other animals. Make sure to do plenty of research before giving anything to your pet.
  • If your dog has a medical condition, consult with the vet before trying anything new.

 

 

Arthritis herbal blend

2 parts yucca powder

1 part turmeric powder

1 part nettle leaf powder

1 part ashwagandha powder

 

Healthy heart blend

1 part hawthorn berry powder

1 part hawthorn leaf and flower powder

 

Anti-tumor blend

1 part Rene Caisse powder

1 part reishi mushroom powder

 

Bad breath and digestion blend

2 parts peppermint

1 part oregano powder

1 part yucca powder

2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley leaves

 

Dried herbs should be ground to a powder before adding to the recipe. You can pulverize dried herbs in a powerful blender like a Vitamix or Nutribullet, or use an electric coffee grinder.

The term “parts” refers to a unit of measurement. A part can be measured by volume (such as a tablespoon or cup) or by weight (such as grams or ounces).
