Sometimes, no matter how well you take care of yourself, you end up getting sick with the flu. Here is a list of 7 things to do and not do to get healthy fast and get back into the swing.
1. Do stay home and sleep.
The most important thing you can do when you have the flu is rest and let your body heal itself, which it does quite well during sleep. Sometimes, when I'm sick I cannot sleep even though I'm exhausted. I like to use a lavender and flax eye pillow when I can't sleep, especially when my sinuses are inflamed. You can make your own lavender and flax eye pillow, or buy one here. You can also try Knock Out Drops, a blend of potent sleep herbs in easy-to-use drops. Click here to learn more.
2. Don’t try to be a hero and tough it out at work if you’re sick.
When you allow your body to rest, your available energy will be used by your immune system to fight the infection. It will take longer to get over the flu if you’re active, and you’ll end up passing the germs on to others.
3. Do fast if you have a fever.
Our bodies have a finite amount of energy. When we eat, a good portion of our vital energy is occupied with digesting food. After the fever breaks, have a big bowl of hot soup. During the fever stage, it’s much better to fast with only water and healing herbal tea. My favorite tea is Sniffles, which is mega-helpful in breaking up mucus. I also love Elderberry Tonic, which helps kick your immune system into gear.
4. Don’t consume sugar.
Sugar depresses your immune function for up to 5 hours after consuming. This not only means no popsicles and ginger ale, it also means no fruits and fruit juices, and no teas sweetened with sugar or honey. No sugar means no sugar.
5. Do an herbal steam.
Open up congested sinuses with Sinus Relief Tea. The combination of Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and other herbs and spices kills germs and helps you breathe more easily. Place a glass or ceramic bowl on the table and add one or two tablespoons of Sinus Relief tea. Pour boiling water over the tea, lean your head over the bowl, and make a little tent by covering both your head and the bowl with a large towel. Inhale the aromatic steam for several minutes. You can repeat this process as often as you like. Side benefit: you’re giving yourself a facial while you inhale the steam.
If doing an herbal steam is too much work for you, get one of those ultrasonic essential oil diffusers and put some peppermint and eucalyptus oil in it. This will not only help you open your sinuses; the essential oils will also help disinfect the entire room. You can buy one of those here.
6. Don’t get dehydrated.
Drink lots of water, plus lots of Elderberry Tonic tea. Elderberries were closely studied by a scientist in Israel, who found that they helped prevent the flu virus from attacking the cells of the body. Elderberry Tonic contains lots of immune-boosting vitamin C and echinacea, and licorice root, which helps keep your body hydrated.
7. Do take a bath.
Soaking in the tub is relaxing, and encourages your body to sweat out toxins. To increase both the relaxing benefits of a hot bath, as well as boost the healing process, add 4 cups of Dreaming True Tea to the bathwater. The ingredients in Dreaming True not only help you relax; they also help kill germs and support the immune system. It may even be helpful for headache and sinus congestion.
Follow these guidelines, try not to stress about anything, and you’ll be back on your feet in no time.
