In a person’s early 40’s, maintaining a youthful appearance becomes increasingly dependent on self-care and nutrition. In both genders, the brain and body slow down, and declining hormone levels can lead to a variety of unwanted changes. While aging impacts both genders, this article will focus specifically on the unique challenges that women face and how they can maintain youthful beauty in their mid-forties and beyond (sorry, guys!).
Most women experience a decline in female hormones during their 40’s as their bodies begin the transition towards menopause, which takes several years. Declining estrogen and an increase in the ratio of male to female hormones can mean unwanted changes, like thinning hair, more wrinkles, and even changes in bone health and structure. Yikes! Thankfully, there are many things that women can do to keep their bodies youthful.
If you’ve come to any of our beauty classes (Luminous Skin for Life, DIY Spa Night, or The Best Hair of Your Life), you’ll know that your skin’s main layer, the dermis, cannot be accessed directly from the outside and must be nourished internally. Therefore, proper nutrition is extremely important. Here are some key nutrients:
Vitamin C: This vitamin is all-important for collagen building and cell turnover for a bright complexion. This is found abundantly in fruits and many vegetables. Some good sources include citrus fruits, cruciferous vegetables (such as cabbages and broccoli), pineapples, rosehips, and berries. Note that vitamin C degrades with heat, so make sure to get enough raw fruits and veggies!
Beta Carotene: This form of Vitamin A helps to protect the skin from sun damage and is essential for forming retinol in the body in a safe manner. It keeps the liver healthy and protects the body from free radicals. Carrots and peppers are abundant in this vitamin, as well as dark leafy greens.
Sulfur: This mineral is extremely important for protecting the skin and nervous system. Load up on cruciferous veggies, allium vegetables (root vegetables such as onions and garlic), radishes, and for an extra boost, try adding in a daily dose of fermented cabbage (such as sauerkraut)!
Silica: Want glossy hair and nails? You need this mineral! Bell peppers and cucumbers are winners in the silica department. And if you want an extra boost, the oat milky tops in Love My Hair tea will do wonders for your beauty!

You’ve probably heard a lot about these amazing compounds. Antioxidants protect your cells from all the environmental “bad guys” (called free radicals) that are out to age your body and damage your skin. Antioxidants come in many varieties, and they tend to be pigmented (so they’re colorful!). When you eat a diet that spans the rainbow, you’re more likely to get protection from different kinds of toxins. So eat greens, peppers, fruits, roots, and flowers! Berries are especially high in antioxidants, so load up!

Circulation is key for delivering nutrients and keeping your cells young. Hair growth, in particular, depends vitally on circulation. Minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, hormones, and fats are all transported via the blood. To increase blood flow, make sure you get plenty of exercise (don’t skip cardio, even if you hate it!), do inverted poses (like Downwards Dog), and consume plenty of circulation-boosting herbs, like ginger. If you do not follow a strictly ketogenic diet, then it is important to minimize your consumption of cholesterols and saturated fats, particularly in the form of oils.

Keeping your organs of detoxification (lungs, liver, kidneys, skin, colon, and lymph) healthy are key to staying young and glowing. Be sure to drink plenty of water (and your favorite herbal teas!) and eat lots of fiber to keep your colon clean.

Your skin absorbs most of what you put on it, so be kind to your skin! Exfoliation and proper nourishment are essential. Oils like jojoba and rosehip seed oil keep your skin youthful and prevent wrinkling.
